AIADMK merger likely to be announced today

The two rival factions of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are expected to announce their merger on Monday, according to leaders from both the camps. While former chief minister O. Panneerselvam had confirmed on Saturday that merger talks were on the “right path and good news could be expected in two days”, a senior leader from his faction, who asked for anonymity, confirmed on Sunday that Panneerselvam could settle for the post of deputy chief minister.

Govt plans bulk drugs parks, import curbs to boost manufacturing in India

In a bid to revive India’s active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and bulk drug market, the government is contemplating restrictions on the import of APIs and has suggested setting up of mega bulk drug parks, a move that is expected to boost domestic production. In the draft pharmaceutical policy framed by the department of pharmaceuticals under the ministry of chemicals and fertilizers, the centre has proposed “peak customs duty” for all APIs that can be indigenously manufactured.

Notice to 9 more smartphone makers over data security details

The government has sent notices to nine more smartphone manufacturers seeking details of their security practices as it looks to ensure that every smartphone sold in India is accounted for and the making of all devices have a proper security infrastructure in place.  These include Motorola, Asus, Honor, Oneplus, Coolpad, Infocus, Blu, Oppo, Nubia. The government had earlier asked 21 smartphone makers — a majority of them from China — to share the security practices and architecture they follow, while making devices.

Infosys rocked by internal turmoil and without a permanent chief executive at the helm, is in danger of losing ground to rivals and missing growth targets for the fiscal, say analysts who anticipate further turbulence at India’s second-largest software services company following the sudden exit of its CEO Vishal Sikka on Friday. Battered by charges of poor “corporate governance” by its founder NR Narayana Murthy who launched a series of public broadsides against the company beginning February, Infosys has struggled to keep pace in an industry beset by multiple threats from automation of IT services to rising protectionism in the US —its largest market.

Insolvency resolution professional rules out refund possibility for home buyers in Jaypee case 

The insolvency resolution professional (IRP) handling the Jaypee Infratech case has ruled out the possibility of home buyers getting refunds, but has assured efforts are being made to ensure the continuation of project development.
The Allahabad bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on August 9 classified Jaypee Infratech as insolvent on the petition filed by IDBI Bank under Section 7 of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016.

Delhi airport flight operations halted for nearly an hour over drone scare

Flight operations at Delhi airport were halted twice for around two hours on Sunday after pilots of two airlines spotted a drone-like object in the area even as security agencies went into a tizzy. The pilot of an international airline first noticed a flying object during landing which led to the closure of runways from 11. 20 am to 12.20 pm. In the evening, a pilot of Air Asia spotted a similar object and informed the ground staff, following which flight operations were halted for 40 minutes.

15 years on, 46 key roads on China front still not ready

Confronted with the abysmal progress in building infrastructure for swifter mobility of troops and weapons along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the government has now approved greater delegation of administrative and financial powers to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for faster execution of construction projects. But first, the grim reality check: Only 27 “strategic roads” (963-km) of the 73 (totalling (4,643-km) identified for construction along the LAC over 15 years ago have been completed till now.
